The 15 g Organic Basil by La Caravane des Épices is organically grown and certified under IFS and Ecocert standards. Packaged in France, this product is made entirely from natural ingredients. It is believed that basil was first cultivated in India four thousand years ago. As it was considered a sacred herb, basil was offered to the deities Vishnu and Krishna. It then became popular in Asia and Egypt, where it was used in the mummification process, after it was discovered to have antibacterial and conservation properties. It then arrived in Greece and Rome where it was a royal herb and a symbol of fertility. It was used as both a herb and an ornamental plant. The name “basil” comes from the Greek “basilikos”, meaning royal. The princesses of Byzantium gave it this name for its beauty and its flavour. It was then in the Mediterranean basin where the herb started to be used in cooking. This organic, natural basil, with no colourings or preservatives, has been carefully selected by La Caravane des Épices.

To preserve its flavour, add it to your dish at the end of cooking. Basil is essential in the preparation of pistou soup or pesto alla genovese, and is a wonderful flavouring for salads.
